final exam reminder -- FOR FACE TO FACE CLASS ONLY -- SOC 201A

Due to the power outage this semester, we lost one day of class. Because of this, we are not able to cover the topic of religion. The final exam will only cover the lectures and readings on politics (Day 15 lectures and readings) and family (Day 16 lectures and readings). The final exam will NOT cover the material on religion (Day 17 lectures and readings). This message is ONLY for the FACE TO FACE class.

Midterm 3 moved to Thursday, 7/12

We are still a day behind due to the power outage. We will take midterm 3 on Thursday, July 12. On Tuesday we will cover social interaction, and on Wednesday we will discuss social stratification. Midterm 3, then, covers the material we will cover on Tuesday and Wednesday. See the syllabus for the readings.

midterm 1 moved to Wednesday

As you know, class was canceled on Thursday due to a campus-wide power outage. We will cover theoretical perspectives on Tuesday next week. Midterm 1 will be moved to Wednesday.

Also, I was unable to post the powerpoint slides for Wednesday’s lecture on Wednesday night, as the Cuesta website was down. I just posted them a few minutes ago.

See you Tuesday.

Study guide/discussion question questions for "Faith at Work" by RUSSELL SHORTO:

Study guide/discussion question questions for "Faith at Work" by RUSSELL SHORTO:

How does Shorto see the practice of religion in America?
According to Shorto, with respect to religious activities, what is legal and what is not legal in the workplace?
What is an affinity group?

Here are some discussion questions:
Do you think Bank should allow their tellers to pray for customers?

Do you think that colleges should allow their structures to pray for their students? Do you have the right to apply for a job in a secular company not outwardly Christian?

Do you the right to expect your bank, grocery store, and college to be secular, not contaminated by religiosity?

Should religious groups be allowed the same privileges and benefits that companies offer to ethnic groups and gay and lesbian groups?

Should companies allow proselytizing?

Is proselytizing harassment or discrimination?

When religious groups engage the culture, is it possible for your message not to get contaminated? Can you keep your message pure?
